About the role

We are looking for a Product Engineer Intern to join us this summer and help build the next generation of AI-powered data tooling at Hex.

Our mission is to empower users to understand and work with data using natural language and agentic AI capabilities. As an intern, you’ll contribute directly to product features that sit at the core of how data teams explore, analyze, and collaborate. You don’t need prior AI experience to succeed – we’re looking for curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to dive into fast-evolving technology.

This is an opportunity to learn from experienced engineers, ship real features to production, and contribute meaningfully to one of the most exciting technical spaces of our time.

What you will do

As a Product Engineer Intern, you will work across the stack – paired with mentors and collaborating closely with designers, PMs, and AI engineers to build delightful, reliable, and intelligent user experiences.

You will:

  • Build real product features across the stack, using React, Typescript, and/or Python, helping power the core workflows used by thousands of data practitioners.
  • Collaborate with AI engineers to prototype and refine agentic capabilities, explore prompting strategies, and improve model quality across user-facing experiences.
  • Design and improve end-to-end workflows, contributing to features for collaborative editing, data exploration, debugging, or AI-assisted development.
  • Solve practical engineering challenges, such as performance optimizations, front-end UX improvements, and API design supporting AI-driven features.
  • Participate in the full development lifecycle, from ideation and design to implementation, testing, and launch.

About you

  • You are pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with plans to graduate in December 2026 or 2027.
  • You have full-stack engineering experience, ideally Javascript, Typescript and/or Python, and have built projects, academic, personal, or professional, that demonstrate your ability to ship software.
  • You have an interest in AI-driven product experiences, and are eager to learn how AI agents, prompting strategies, and context engineering work in production systems.
  • You care about users and enjoy thinking about how technical systems translate into polished, intuitive experiences.
  • You are curious, adaptable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift as new technology emerges.
  • You enjoy collaborating with others, asking questions, and learning from more senior engineers.

This is a hybrid role (3 days per week in office) based in San Francisco or New York.

In addition to our unique culture, Hex proudly offers a competitive total rewards package, including but not limited to, market-benched salary & equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible paid time off.

The salary range for this role is: $11,000 per month + housing stipend

Software Engineering Intern https://capd.mit.edu/jobs/automat-ai-software-engineering-intern/ Mon, 02 Mar 2026 12:47:21 +0000 https://capd.mit.edu/jobs/automat-ai-software-engineering-intern/ About Automat

Automat is building the next generation of intelligent automation. Founded by a group of creative technologists and bolstered by repeat entrepreneurs with backgrounds spanning Google X, Stanford’s StartX accelerator, and other high-impact startup environments, we’re redefining how businesses use AI agents to automate complex processes and document workflows.

Our goal is to replace bulky, expensive legacy RPA solutions with modern, flexible systems that combine AI, automation, and thoughtful product design. We value creativity, pragmatism, collaboration, and real-world impact over rigid requirements or titles.

If you’re excited by fast-moving product development, emerging AI tools, and building systems that ship to real customers, this role is for you.

The Role

  • We’re looking for a Software Engineering to join our sub-10 person engineering team. This role is best suited for students with some prior on the job experience who want meaningful ownership, rapid learning, and the chance to make a visible impact.
  • As an intern at Automat, you won’t be working on isolated tasks or internal throwaway projects. You’ll contribute directly to customer-facing features, internal tooling, and core product systems — with close support and mentorship from senior engineers and founders who have built and scaled companies before.
  • This role is designed to feel close to full-time scope and responsibility, while still providing the guidance and structure needed to learn quickly and succeed.

What You’ll Work On

  • Contributing to our core product suite, including Automat Studio, agent-driven workflows, and supporting developer tools
  • Building user-facing interfaces that abstract complex automation into intuitive, human-friendly experiences
  • Working across the stack (frontend, backend, APIs) using modern frameworks and tools
  • Collaborating closely with forward-deploy engineers to understand real customer use cases and translate them into scalable product improvements
  • Learning how enterprise automation systems are designed, shipped, and maintained in production
  • Participating in code reviews, design discussions, and product planning sessions

What You’ll Learn

  • How to build and ship real production software on a small, high-impact team
  • How modern AI-assisted development workflows accelerate iteration (and where they fall short)
  • How product, engineering, and customer needs intersect in early-stage companies
  • How experienced founders and senior engineers think about tradeoffs, architecture, and long-term scalability
  • How to take ownership of work end-to-end, from idea to implementation

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong fundamentals in software engineering, gained through coursework, internships, or personal projects
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and learning quickly in new domains
  • Curiosity about AI, automation, and modern developer tooling
  • Thoughtful communication and collaboration skills
  • A proactive mindset and desire to leave systems better than you found them

Experience with technologies like React, Next.js, Node.js, Supabase, or modern cloud platforms is a plus, but not a requirement. We care more about how you think and learn than what tools you’ve already mastered.

Why This Internship Is Different

  • You’ll be part of a small engineering team where your work has immediate impact
  • You’ll learn directly from senior mentors and founders with deep experience building startups and products at scale
  • You’ll ship real features used by real customers — not intern-only projects
  • You’ll gain exposure to the full lifecycle of product development, from customer problem to production system

Our Philosophy

We encourage everyone to apply. Talent, curiosity, and perspective matter more to us than years of experience. We’re looking for people who are excited to grow quickly, take ownership, and build meaningful systems — and who want to learn as much from the team as we’ll learn from them.
