Under federal and state law, patients with Low English Proficiency (LEP) must be provided with a qualified medical interpreter to ensure equitable access to healthcare services. Medical interpreters are a critical part of healthcare teams in hospitals and medical centers. They do more than speak several languages: they have been trained in standards of practice, a code of ethics, and medical terminology adjusted to varying educational levels to facilitate oral communication of linguistic and cultural information between immigrant patients and their healthcare providers. In this virtual session led by Lisa Morris, the Director of Cross-Cultural Initiatives at UMass Chan Medical School, you will learn what medical interpreters do and how to best work with them in your future medical practice. You will also gain insight into the challenges LEP patients face in healthcare settings. This CAPD event is open to MIT undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni.
