MIT Internship Programs – Career Advising & Professional Development | MIT https://capd.mit.edu Mon, 25 Sep 2023 22:55:50 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.3 MIT Washington Office Internship Program https://capd.mit.edu/organizations/mit-washington-office-internship-program/ Sat, 26 Aug 2023 00:22:24 +0000 https://capd.mit.edu/?post_type=organization&p=154926 Internships with the MIT Washington Office offer students – from MIT and elsewhere – the chance to learn about and work on a wide range of policy issues, as well as to receive guidance from a leading team of policy developers and advocates.

Interns’ activities may include policy research, attending briefings and hearings, and writing summaries of bills and events. Interns may also accompany the DC Office staff to their meetings. In addition, interns meet regularly with the staff to discuss current events and their projects. The office tries to build each internship around a student’s interests and strengths.

Prospective candidates should have a significant interest in policy issues of relevance to MIT – whether issues that affect MIT as an institution, or ones that draw on expertise MIT can offer. They should also possess strong communication and interpersonal skills. Applicants to the MIT Washington Office Internship program do not need to be political science majors or even to have taken a political science course.

The internship program is:

  • Open to undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Open to students from all universities (though preference is given to MIT students during the summer).

  • Open only to students who can obtain course credit and/or a stipend for the internship through their home institution. Credit guidelines need to be agreed on before the internship commences. These summer internships are unpaid, but some MIT students in the program have secured Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) funding in the past.

  • Open to students who can only work part-time, as well as those who can put in a full work week.

  • Educational in nature, and does not lead to employment or enrollment at MIT.

Materials Science and Engineering: Industrial Internship Program https://capd.mit.edu/organizations/materials-science-and-engineering-industrial-internship-program/ Fri, 06 Aug 2021 00:56:17 +0000 https://mit.uconnectlabs.com/?post_type=organization&p=11208 The Internship Program of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT offers undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to experience research, development, or production in industry. For the bachelor’s degree, two ten-week work periods in an industrial, governmental, or academic organization establishment are required. Normally, these occur during the summers preceding the junior and senior years. Students register for the MIT subjects 3.930 and 3.931 Internship Program. The second of these work periods, properly reported, is accepted in lieu of the undergraduate thesis.

Program Coordinators: Prof. Antoine Allanore (allanore@mit.edu); Academic Administrator: Rebecca Shepardson (bshep@mit.edu)

LGO internships provide an industrial “laboratory” for research on operations management and engineering. Students use cutting-edge advancements to tackle tangible solutions that benefit the host company. Internship research forms the basis for the master’s thesis, which is a dual-degree academic paper.

Employers:
Contact Ted Equi, LGO Fellows Program Director of Academics, Research, and Careers, to participate in the LGO recruiting program. All LGO partner companies are invited to visit the MIT campus to interview LGO students in the second-year class. MIT Washington Summer Internship Program https://capd.mit.edu/organizations/mit-washington-summer-internship-program/ Fri, 11 Jun 2021 15:49:01 +0000 https://mit.uconnectlabs.com/?post_type=organization&p=440 Some of the most far-reaching decisions about science and technology research, budgeting, regulation, and implementation are made in Washington, DC.

These decisions have profound effects on telecommunications, energy, healthcare, urban planning, and many other fields. They are the product of debate, collaboration, and negotiation among elected officials, agencies, and private-sector organizations – many of which do not have substantial technical knowledge.

The MIT Washington Program has, since 1995, placed undergraduates from across the Institute in summer internships where they actively contribute to this process. Housing and a stipend are provided, and clerical work is minimized, so students can apply their research, analysis, and writing skills for their internship sponsors, which include many of the country’s most influential offices and organizations.

The program includes on-campus classes before and after the internships, and requires a spring break trip to Washington. Participants come from every part of MIT, and apply their experience in a wide range of careers, from research to management to scientific policymaking.
